Accidents happen, and knowing what to do when one occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Here are tips from Dr. Jon Wheeler and the Wheeler Pediatric Dentistry Team.
Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Permanent Tooth:
- Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root).
- Rinse gently with water if dirty, but do not scrub.
- Place in the Save-A-Tooth solution or cold milk.
- Contact Wheeler Pediatric Dentistry immediately (within 30 minutes is critical for reimplantation success).
Knocked-Out Primary (Baby) Tooth:
- Please don’t attempt to reinsert. Contact Dr. Wheeler and the experts at our Woodlands pediatric dentistry office in Sterling Ridge for evaluation.
Broken or Chipped Tooth:
- Collect fragments in a plastic bag.
- Rinse the mouth with warm water.
- Apply gauze to control bleeding and contact the dentist.
Loose or Displaced Tooth:
- Instruct the child to avoid moving the tooth.
- Contact the dentist for urgent evaluation.
Soft Tissue Injuries (Lip, Tongue, Cheek):
- Clean the area with water, apply gauze to control bleeding, and use an ice pack to reduce swelling.
- Contact the dentist if bleeding persists or the injury is severe.
Toothache:
- Rinse with warm water to dislodge debris.
- Check for swelling or fever, and contact Dr. Wheeler if either is present.
